President of SOBOPE visited the hospital beds on Wednesday (10). Complaints indicate lack of vacancies in the oncology ward.
The president of the Brazilian Society of Pediatric Oncology (SOBOPE) visited the beds of the Hospital Infantil de Vitória, on Wednesday (10), and said that the situation of the unit is serious. "It is a situation of calamity, which is not adequate under any circumstances to the minimum criteria," said Teresa Cristina Fonseca.
Complaints by parents of children indicate that there has been no vacancy in the oncology ward since last Saturday (6). According to reports, the hospitalization vacancy only arise when other children die.
Children in need of hospitalization are being accommodated in other areas of the hospital, such as the isolation room, for patients with some contagious disease and orthopedics. The stretchers are placed near dumpsters, with patients very close to each other.
"You can not have a contaminant near a child who is depressed. It already has a greater chance of having serious infection and if you put something contaminating, such as garbage, that chance increases even more. Why do you have to have minimal space? Precisely to avoid translocation of infection. In a child with leukemia, for example, most of the time, she will not die from a refractory leukemia, but from the intercurrences, such as the infection, which is the main one, "said Teresa Cristina.
In addition to this problem, the mothers complain that, to reach the oncology sector, they have to pass in front of the funeral home. "The people, who already have that incredible pain, have to see them passing with a child to put inside the funeral car," said a mother.
The direction of the Hospital Estadual Infantil de Vitória informed that the transfers to the oncology are being provided. But the president of Acacci, Marilza Vairo, said that the situation could already have been resolved.
"We have partnered with the Ronald McDonald Institute, now the Ministry of Health has offered us partnership as well, we have Sobop, Coniac, which is the National Confederation of Cancer Institutions, which the representative is here as well. They can help us to get money to build a hospital, but we are not seeing a solution, "said Marilza.
Health's Secretary
The Secretary of State for Health (SESA) said in a note that the direction of the Children's Hospital recognizes the challenge of optimizing care, but that demand has grown because of the excellence of services.
Sesa explained that the transfers need to be made inside the hospital, since it is the only unit in the state that offers this service. They hope to ease the situation of the Children's Hospital in Santa Lucia, with the transfer of the first aid to Bento Ferreira.
The place where the emergency room is currently operating will be reformed and expanded to increase the supply of cancer treatment and complex cases. Altogether, the emergency room will receive 70 new beds. The renovation works are in the final phase and the opening of the beds must occur until July.
